The Doom is the third largest church in the world. It is dedicated to the saint Santa Maria del Fiore and is designed in typical Italian gothic architecture. The present building was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio (1245-1302), who was considered one of the greatest architectures of his age. The Duomo was built around 1367. It is covered completely in marble, as are most architecture in Florence, because it is a lavish city. Many of the Renaissance artists were commissioned to paint the inside facade of the Duomo. From the outside the Duomo looks almost like a painting rather than a real building or church.
This is a picture from across the river of the Ponte Vecchi bridge. The bridge is the oldest bridge in Italy so it is of great importance for the Florentines that live there. |
